July (Shop in Shop) Footfall decreased by -2.4% Y-O-Y

From Taiwan’s (shop in shop) footfall and sales index, we can see the recent year’s July indexes (as yellow marked below). However, due to the base effects of last July (160.4%) (which caused a higher base period); plus the summer vacation travel surge (More see: 【Insight】2023 July Outbound Traveller from Taiwan), according to a news report, foreign purchases of luxury goods can be lower 20% off, and cosmetics can be lower 30% off, which impacted the domestic sales.; as a result, this July’s footfall index at a reduced -2.4%.

According to the news report:

According to the Department of Statistics, Department Store (Large-scale complexes) sales were NT$ 34.7 billion in July, and increased by 9.9% M-O-M and 11.1% Y-O-Y. Aggregated sales from January to July were NT$ 245.9 billion, and increased by 21.6% Y-O-Y. Take the big three for example, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi and Far Eastern Department Store’s July sales only saw an increase of 2%~3%; as for SOGO Department Store, due to a lower base period caused by refurbishment last year, were able to maintain a double-digit growth in July’s sales. Compared to the sales increase of 20% in the first half of 2023, the growth in July and August saw an obvious reduction.

The Daily Footfall index also shows a similar reduction. Starting strong at about an increase by 15% in the first half of July, however, finished at about -20% at the end of the month.
